The evolution of girl gamers
Male gamers are so self-centered they act as though women haven’t been playing video games for decades, then act horrified when the female gamers who’ve always been there actually become visible and vocal about the rampant misogyny in the gaming world.
Like seriously, how entitled do you have to be that women saying “it would be nice if I wasn’t treated like shit while trying to enjoy the games I play” translates to “I must be catered to” when video games have LITERALLY been catering to (cishet) men for decades?
I didn’t get all the dates, but I think you can get the point.
Also considered posting my own personal gaming history, but I would’ve had to go back to the 80s for that. e_e
Ask any girl in college or around my age (I am 24) if they have played video games, and I bet most of them would say that they played some kind of Nintendo system as a kid and they probably even have a favorite game. One of my best friends does not seem like a gamer, she is very much a party girl and acts like a woman that doesn’t play games, but go into her apartment and she has an N64 set up and a PILE of old N64 games. I don’t care what genre they are or what anyone else says, she clearly is an old school gamer, obviously played when she was a kid, and STILL plays games even now. They have always been there, ALWAYS, but game companies and “hard core male gamers” try not to say them or try to dismiss them because the play “kiddie games”, like most games from Nintendo. I don’t know about you, but Nintendo has made some of the best games of all times and if you hand anyone my age or above an old cartridge, their eyes would probably glaze over in nostalgia, and then they would demand to pop it in to play some of that old school stuff.
Girl gamers aren’t asking for games to “cater to their needs”, but they are asking to be RECOGNIZED AS REAL GAMERS, and to be treated AS PART OF THE DEMOGRAPHICS. There are games pointed at children, families, and many different kinds of “hardcore male gamers”, then why aren’t there more games pointed at women? Why aren’t there more games made by women for women?
I felt it necessary to strike out the flaming load of bullshit contained in the second response.
As of replying to this, I am 31-years-old. I have been around since the Atari was still being sold in stores. I was born the same year as the North American Video Game Crash of 1983. We had an Atari, a Magnavox Odyssey, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Playstation… Never at any time were any of these consoles designated to any specific family member. They were for me, my brother, my sister, my father, and my mother. We all played games on them, including playing some together (games like Jeopardy and Win, Lose, or Draw allowed for four players).
To be quite honest, the greatest “obstacle” faced by female gamers is their own behavior. Girls who play video games are not “special” for doing so, and don’t deserve any kind of special treatment because of it. They are all gamers, and should be considered on the same level as anyone else. If they lack the same skills of a male player, they should take the time to consider how many hours of gameplay each person has logged, rather than assume it has anything to do with gender.
It’s the same difference as those that complain about men that don’t want to date feminists. It isn’t because you’re a feminist - it’s because of how you ACT regarding it. If you act like a stuck-up bitch that seems to want a medal just for identifying as a feminist, then don’t be surprised that guys don’t want to be anywhere near you.
I’m a woman that now also plays online games, including first-person shooters. If you go onto a server and act like a giggly, hyper-defensive girl that expects people to “go easy” on them just for being a girl, you’ll likely wear on the nerves of the other players pretty goddamn quick.
If you just play the goddamn game like everyone else, and don’t try to blame your skill level on your gender (nor obnoxiously proclaim it when you manage a kill on another player), then NOBODY REALLY GIVES A SHIT WHAT YOUR GENDER IS.
It isn’t because you’re a “girl gamer” - it’s because you’re acting like a goddamn entitled little snot about it. On a side note, it’s funny how “feminists” complain about alleged exclusion from what they deem “male” activities, and then turn around and whine that men are “invading spaces for women” anytime they actually openly embrace something even slightly “feminine”. And then, to top it off, they have the gall to sit around and wonder WHY men avoid femininity, when LOOK HOW THE HELL YOU TREAT THEM ABOUT IT.
As for complaining about not enough games being made “by women for women”, please actually provide some statistics regarding how many women are actually trying to get into the field of producing games, because if women just plain aren’t as interested in going into those fields, then whining about their lack of presence is just asinine. You want women to make games? Then go into that field as a career, and MAKE SOME.
By the way, I also have to laugh at all of this, because apparently, none of you have ever browsed through roms for Japanese Nintendo and Sega games, because there were actually a shit ton of games out there designed with girls in mind.
